There is a moment in Jan Kaláb’s trajectory that puts everything in order. It was not when he left the street for the studio, nor when he traded the spray can for the brush. It was when, after years of painting graffiti, he stopped looking at the letters and started looking at the spaces between them.

In those gaps, in that geometry no one had named, lay the way out of what he himself called the cage of letters: the trap of repeating one’s own name until the name becomes everything and leaves no room for anything else. From those voids, the circle emerged. And the circle changed everything — not as a form, but as an idea: a line that divides space into two worlds that call out to each other. The interior and the exterior. Presence and absence. “The circle is just a point. Only bigger.”

It was in Buenos Aires, in 2014, that he painted a large circle on an exterior wall and called it a black hole. It was not an image of the cosmos: it was a demonstration that the circle — any circle — divides the world into two spaces that cannot be measured. The interior and the exterior are both infinite. And the infinite, like the void, has no bottom. From that black hole emerged all the organic forms that animate Jan Kaláb’s work in Universe. The cosmos seen from the outside and the cell seen from within turned out to share the same geometry. The difference between the microcosm and the macrocosm is not one of nature — only of scale.

Universe is neither a survey nor a retrospective. It is the physical demonstration of that system of thought across its different materializations.

The flat paintings are the most immediate entry point: organic forms that oscillate between the cosmic and the cellular without committing to either. The darkest of them, Dripping Inverted Light 425, is the most direct heir to the Buenos Aires black hole — an imperfect circle of deep black surrounded by a melting rainbow, with a small detail that breaks away and orbits below. Another point.

The relief paintings take that ambiguity one step further: these are paintings that have mass, surfaces that cast shadow, forms that grow toward the viewer. In Hot Wave over Cold Horizon 826, orange and red — heat — descend from above while cold blue rises from below: two forces that never quite meet, contained in a form that belongs neither to painting nor to sculpture, but to some space between the two.

The suspended sculpture series Form of Void is the most literal realisation of the title: hollow bodies that take you somewhere else. These are not colour gradients applied to a surface — they are layers of aluminium, each painted a different tone, whose separation constructs the transition between states: the sequence, the gradient. To look at them is to ask whether what you are seeing is heat or cold, interior or exterior, flat or volumetric. The same piece shifts in nature depending on the angle. Impossible to measure. Impossible to resolve.

The bronze sculpture Blue Flame 826 — two hundred centimetres ascending from a base of pure black toward a luminous yellow — closes the circle of this proposition. Its form is born from the gesture of painting with spray: the mark that moves forward and twists, that ceases to be a solid line and becomes a degraded volume. It is the movement of graffiti freed from the wall. A flame that does not go out because it is not burning — it is happening.

Universe holds the dualities that define Jan Kaláb’s practice — flat and volume, geometric and organic, interior and exterior, micro and macro, static and in motion — and sustains them within a single space without any need for resolution. Jan Kaláb has spent more than thirty years looking inside that point. If we are all just points in the universe, like Jan, I want to know what is in it.
