Alejandro Botubol

Alejandro Botubol (Cádiz, 1979) is a painter trained at the Faculty of Fine Arts Santa Isabel de Hungría in Seville. He furthered his studies in New York, where he was influenced by artists such as James Turrell and Dan Flavin, and holds an MA in Contemporary Art, Idea and Production from the University of Seville.

His recent work is structured around a process-based series of landscape paintings in which images overlap, seeking chance encounters. A constant in his practice is the exploration of spatial phenomena, incorporating internal and symbolic elements linked to lived experience, sometimes starting from found images. His painting addresses themes such as absence, gravity, spirituality and time, with a particular focus on geometry, colour and light.

He has received, among others, the BMW Painting Prize (2019) and the Gold Medal at the International Plastic Arts Prize of Valdepeñas (2021). He has undertaken residencies in New York and Chicago, and his work has been exhibited across Europe and the Americas. He currently lives and works in Madrid.
